Project Team

The LifeChamps Project Team is composed of highly-skilled professionals experienced in both clinical studies and medical research as well as in technical developments. The diversity of expertise within LifeChamps is essential for achieving the technological challenges of the project. The proposed group ensures a full set of complementary skills and experiences for designing, developing and testing of a suitable LifeChamps solution. Their complementarity extends over many diverse technological fields, bringing together the necessary expertise and know-how to achieve the project goals. The LifeChamps partners are fully capable to exploit the new knowledge and new developments. The point of view of diverse areas covered by the LifeChamps partners will also steer the project’s activities of towards commercial oriented paths.

Panos Bamidis

Prof. of Medical Physics, Medical Informatics, Medical Education at Lab of Medical Physics and Digital Innovation, School of Medicine, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH)

Panagiotis Bamidis is a Professor of Medical Physics, Medical Informatics and Medical Education in the School of Medicine of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), Greece. He designs, implements and evaluates IT and Assistive Technologies systems that improve everyday activities of elderly or other vulnerable groups and improves their health or life quality or improves the education and training of health professionals. He conducts research that attempts to understand how the brain reacts to different stimuli, technological or educational interventions, as well as, the development and evolution of human emotions and sleep transitions. Co-creation and Living Lab approaches are within his active interests. He is the co-ordinator of seven large European projects, and the principal investigator for many national and international funded projects. He is the President of the Hellenic Biomedical Technology Society, the international Society of Applied Neuroscience, a member of the Administration Boards of other societies and patient associations, the Chairman/Organiser of some 19 international conferences and several national Biomedical Technology conferences. Since 2012 he has established LLM Care ecosystem (www.llmcare.gr), the business exploitation of the LLM project, which is a candidate reference site of the EIP-on-AHA. In 2013 he established the Active and Healthy Ageing Living Lab in Thessaloniki (ThessAHALL; http://www.aha-livinglabs.com/) which in 2018 a full member of the European Network of Living Labs (ENoLL). In 2017, he became a visiting Professor of Medical Education Technology, Innovation and Change for the Leeds Institute of Medical Education (LIME) of the University of Leeds, UK. He received Prizes for the Best Track Record in funded research projects (AUTH Research Committee 2009; AUTH Dean of Health Sciences 2016) and Best overall high/extra-ordinary academic performance (AUTH Dean of Health Sciences 2018, 2019).

Antonis Billis

Research Associate at Medical Physics and Digital Innovation Laboratory (AUTH)

Antonis Billis is the manager of the Thessaloniki Active & Healthy Ageing Living Lab ecosystem. He received his diploma in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2007 and MSc in Medical Informatics in 2011, both from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. He also holds a Ptychio in Business Administration and Management from the University of Macedonia, Greece. He is currently working toward the Ph.D. degree in gerontechnology and works with the Laboratory of Medical Physics, Medical School, AUTH. His main research interests lie in the areas of medical decision support systems, AAL technologies, exergaming and user-centered UI design. He has authored/co-authored numerous papers in conferences and peer-reviewed journals. He has also participated in two European research projects, namely ICT Policy Support Programme (ICT PSP) Long Lasting Memories (LLM) and FP7-ICT-2011-7 Unobtrusive Smart Environments For Independent Living (USEFIL) and a national project, called Semantic processing of 3-D IVUS, part of the operational programme, “Competitiveness 2000-2006”. He is currently involved in the coordinating teams of CAPTAIN (Coach Assistant via Projected and Tangible Interface, http://www.captain-eu.org/) and i-Prognosis (Intelligent Parkinson early detection guiding novel supportive interventions, http://www.i-prognosis.eu/) H2020 projects. Antonis Billis also holds a scholarship from the Fanourakis Foundation. Finally he has been a member of the technical chamber of Greece since November of 2007.

Luciano Colares has a degree in Informatics Engineering. With 30+ years of experience in Big Data architectures design, data engineering processes modeling and Business Intelligence. His main responsibilities include the management of Big Data Consultants and Data Scientists in Analytics projects, designing Big Data architectures and roadmaps, writing technical proposals, leading R&D projects, as well as Technical advisory on Big Data platforms design.

Ioannis Poultourtzidis

Research Associate at Medical Physics and Digital Innovation Laboratory (AUTH)

Ioannis Poultourtzidis obtained his BA in Political Science from the Faculty of Law, Economics and Political Science, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. During his studies, he focused on the policies, institutions, and procedures of the European Union and Greece, as well as on refugees, migration, and minorities matters. He has been working as a research associate at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, participating in the research, creation, and development of educational programs and material, and in the research of clinical learning environments in Medicine and associated practices. He has experience in result-oriented project management and has been involved in the management of EU funded projects. Ioannis has held positions within the IT departments of commercial and manufacturing companies and has also worked in planning and promoting events. He has working knowledge of graphic design (Adobe Photoshop, CorelDraw) and ERP software (WinEra, SoftOne). Ioannis holds a certification in Co-creation for policymakers from the Polytechnic University of Milan.

Zoe Valero-Ramon

Senior Researcher at the Universidad Politècnica de València (UPV)

Dr Zoe Valero-Ramón (female) PhD in Telecommunications Engineering in Process Mining applied to the health domain by Universidad Politècnica de València (2022). As a researcher, she has more than ten years of experience in European and Spanish-funded projects. She has mainly specialised in d ICT supporting health, social care, and patient empowerment through education and training. Her research focuses on improving and extracting healthcare processes knowledge through Process Mining techniques.

Dany Shapiro

Mr. Dany Shapiro (male) a proven, visionary and innovative ICT, Big-Data, Cloud Architect with 12 years of experience in all products development life-cycle aspects. A JAVA Expert a driver of high-growth/ high-scale solutions and products in disruptive research and composition of Telco / enterprise grade Cloud / Hybrid platforms. Knowledgeable with hands-on experience in Cloud Computing Architecture and implementation (PaaS, SaaS), SDN and NFV while focusing on storing, processing and analysis of vast amounts of information using technologies like Stream analytics, NoSQL, In-memory data fabric, MapReduce, ML, Predictive analytics and Data integration. Focused on innovation of disruptive technologies, mainly the architectural challenges and the common complexities inherent when faced with elasticity and scale of distributed cloud computing. It‘s completely natural for me to own the architectural and technological responsibility for several development teams, display of leadership abilities in Agile work environment / Scrum.
My Technology Stack with hands on experience:

My core scientific contribution is in the intersection of computer science and behavioral science within a common focus on supporting people living with chronic conditions. Further, Global Digital Health is my vocation and research and innovation my passion. I enjoy advocating and communicating on how digital health can transform our healthcare and ultimately empower people if we do it right.
I am currently involved in launching a new digital therapeutics startup combining AI and behavioral science in unique ways.
As Chief Scientific Officer, my role is to bring 15+ years of experience in digital health research to our solutions aim at empowering people with chronic conditions. We believe, if done properly, digital therapeutics will increase human health equity by focusing on the people rather than strictly on the chronic conditions.
During my 15 years of experience in digital health, I have been involved in real-world digital health initiatives in Europe, Asia, Americas and Africa. In particular, I have been studying how to use web, mobile and wearable technologies to support patient self-management. I have had the honor to work with leading academics, clinicians, pharmaceutical companies, patient advocates and HealthTech companies across the globe.

Panagiotis Matzakos

Research and Innovation Software Engineer at Intrasoft International SA

Panos Matzakos is a Research and Innovation software engineer at Netcompany-Intrasoft. He has extensive experience in development and deployment for large scale software projects within cutting-edge IT solutions and mobile network technologies. He has worked successfully for multiple European and international projects within cross-disciplinary teams around the globe. Previously he worked at Eurecom, France as a R&D engineer and technical project manager for OpenAirInterface open source software/hardware experimentation ecosystem for 3GPP cellular networks (4G/5G technologies). He holds a PhD degree in scheduling and congestion management for Disruption Tolerant Networks from Eurecom/Telecom ParisTech, France. He received his Master of Science in Mobile Communications from Eurecom/Telecom ParisTech in 2013 and his Diploma in Electronic and Computer Engineering from Technical University of Crete in Chania, Greece in 2010.

Panagiotis Emmanouil Kartsidis

Research Associate at Medical Physics and Digital Innovation Laboratory (AUTH)

Panagiotis Emmanouil Kartsidis, was born in Xanthi, Greece in 1986. He holds a BSc in Mathematics and a MSc in Medical Computer Science. He is a Ph.D. candidate at the School of Medicine, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH). Following his MSc, he joined the Neuroscience of Affection and Cognition group (NCA) based at the Lab of Medical Physics, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) as a research associate. He spent a summer in Cyprus working on electrotomography under Dr. Andy Ioannides. Upon his return, he joined Neurofeedback Center of Northern Greece to assist on a 21-month project, funded by the EC research grants. He also worked at BRAINWAVE research project, implementing BCI technology for people with spinal cord injury. Currently he works at the SmokeFreeBrain Project, also funded by the EC research grants. His research interests and experience are on the fields of statistics, EEG, biomedical engineering and signal processing. Additionally to his research, he is the instructor of the cryptology course at CTY-Greece.

Dr Eirini (Irene) Karapistoli, MBA, background combines over 10 years of advanced research and innovation project delivery in cybersecurity, covering domain areas such as data privacy, network intrusion detection, threats and vulnerabilities assessment, decision-making based on cost-benefit analysis, and mathematical optimisation.
Irene holds a diploma degree and a PhD in Electrical & Computer Engineering from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, where she was also the recipient of a postdoctoral research grant focusing onto tackling security issues in wireless sensor networks. Irene also holds an MBA degree from the Blekinge Institute of Technology, Sweden.
