LifeChamps Project

Lifechamps aims to address the inherent complexity caused by cancer treatments and to act in the monitoring of health status and improvement of quality of life in a significant manner by using emerging technologies in the fields of Big Data, Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence. In essence, LifeChamps delivers a novel, context-aware and large-scale analytics framework capable of delivering multi-dimensional Quality of Life (QOL) support to all the different cancer life champions during and after their treatments. LifeChamps is providing support to middle aged and older (pre-frail and frail) cancer patients, as well as their caregivers and healthcare professionals, with an integrated Big Data-driven solution capable to improve their QOL via a timely and more accurate clinical decision support at the point of care. Its Artificial Intelligence (AI) and analytics engine, running both at the cloud and at the mobile edge, can determine accurately which factors affect the oncological patients’ QOL the most, during and after their treatment. Furthermore, complemented by a health recommender system LifeChamps offers personalized healthcare services (such as symptom monitoring, treatment and rehabilitation) to these patients and their caregivers. The LifeChamps platform will be validated in four multi-national pilot use case scenarios aimed at demonstrating its applicability and validity for all the requirements of the SC1-DTH01-2019 Call, namely Prediction, Care, and Advice.

The LifeChamps project aims to disrupt techniques for Big Data modelling, analysis, and aggregation under a novel context-aware Data intensive and large-scale analytics framework towards delivering multi-dimensional Quality of Life solutions for different cancer life champions. To achieve this, LifeChamps project will integrate ground-breaking technologies in the areas of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence towards delivering a smart, personalized and secure platform that will monitor health outcomes and address co-morbidities of cancer champions by preventing long-term effects and improving Quality of Life.

Actions And Results

The LifeChamps project targets recovering older (pre-frail and frail) cancer patients, but also caregivers and multidisciplinary health professionals with a comprehensive solution capable of offering tools and mechanisms to promote patients’ empowerment and improved quality of life via timely and more accurate clinical decision support at the point of care. As such, we propose a structured solution based on a scalable predictive engine in which we determine which features affect the oncological patient’s quality of life the most, during and after the treatment. These results will then be used to feed a recommender system, offering personalized healthcare services such as symptom monitoring, treatment and rehabilitation. A multi-factorial frailty model will allow to stratify sub-clinical frail groups of geriatric cancer patients towards more personalized treatment.
