The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) is the metropolitan University for southern Europe. Its Medical school consists of 500 academic staff members, and 3500 students. In this project, AUTH will participate with the Lab of Medical Physics, the Datalab – Data and Web Science Lab and the Department of Medical Oncology at Papageorgiou General Hospital.
The Lab of Medical Physics is a major research and development centre in: assistive technologies; applied neuroscience; medical education; affective computing; semantic web; medical robotics and brain computer interfaces; radio-diagnosis and non-ionizing radiation. It is composed of 10 research groups, leaders in their respective specialties, which pursue innovative research projects. All groups have been recognized internationally for their research excellence and have been funded by a wide spectrum of sources. The Lab of Medical Physics has fully equipped labs for research (Neuroscience EEG Lab; Living Lab; Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality Labs; Clinical Skills Labs). The Lab has successfully coordinated LLM (Long Lasting Memories) a CIP-PSP EU project on Elderly Care and Cognitive and Physical Training within Ambient Assistive Living, the H2020 SmokeFreeBrain project in line with a call from the Global Alliance of Chronic Diseases (GACD) and currently coordinates the H2020 CAPTAIN, and participates in the Erasmus+ projects AD AUTONOMY, DS Leisure, and Training Against Medical Error (TAME). The Lab also participates to the H2020 INADVANCE project for Palliative Care. To these projects, more can be added, like the FP7 project USEFIL, the FP7 DISCOVER, the Leonardo Da Vinci project “Millenium Hospital”, the CROSSBORDERHEALTH (Interreg CBC), the INTERREG ARCHIMED projects IntraMEDnet and WideMEDnet, the coordination of the Lifelong Learning (TEMPUS) project “ePBLnet” and the eContentPlus project “mEducator”, and numerous others. The Lab of Med Physics is ISO-9001 certified on Software Design, Development & Production and Design & Implementation of Education/Training programs.
The Datalab – Data and Web Science Lab at the AUTH at the Department of Informatics is an active research group engaged in research and innovation on ICT complex data science and engineering technologies, offering end-to- end multi way and multi scope analytics. Data and Web Science Lab can offer end-to-end solutions from raw data to insightful results and from low-level data management to advanced algorithms and applications. It fosters strong international collaborations with multi-disciplinary synergies (engineering, psychology, social sciences, arts, cultural studies, etc.) providing data protection and EU GDPR consultancy and technical support. The group consists of vibrant researchers and developers that encourage entrepreneurship and innovation, providing project management and coordination of research projects and novel ideas for extensive and advanced software and web development. It also supports research and technology transfer to industry through multiple bilateral industry collaborations.
The Department of Medical Oncology at Papageorgiou General Hospital is staffed by specialized medical oncologists who provide comprehensive care and support to oncology patients with all types of solid tumors. Department’s team consists of 6 medical oncologists with extensive clinical experience. In addition, there are 8 fellows in training in the field of Medical Oncology, 26 nurses, and administrative staff who contribute to the care of patients. The aim of the team is to offer modern diagnostic and therapeutic medical services, and continuous comprehensive support for oncology patients and their families. Oncologists are actively involved in various clinical studies, thus giving patients access to innovative treatments. They also have an active presence at many conferences and have contributed to several publications. The Department of Medical Oncology is certified by the quality management system per ELOT EN ISO 9001: 2008 “for its nursing and administrative processes of the Day Clinic and the inpatient Department of Medical Oncology, intern Training, Participation in Clinical trials, Processing and Presentation of related scientific projects”. During 2018 the Department of medical oncology managed 1800 patients with several diagnoses of solid tumors including patients with prostate and breast cancer.
