The LifeChamps consortium has a clear European value. The sheer amount of leading-edge technologies needed to implement the proposed project necessitates a cross-border and cross-sectorial approach. As it can be seen, the LifeChamps partners are geographically dispersed across Europe. In total, the consortium consists of partners coming from ten (10) European countries. Overall, the consortium is comprised of one non-governmental organization (ECPC), two large healthcare providers (APC and HULAFE), three large ICT industries, including DELL (world leader in infrastructure, data storage, hybrid cloud and data protection solutions), ALPT (global innovation and engineering consulting firm) and INTRA (leading European IT solutions and services group), four SMEs (MYSPHERA, ADHERA, CLS, MDS), along with complementary skills obtained from one research institute (KI) and four universities (AUTH, UPV, UOS, UofG).

The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) is the metropolitan University for southern Europe. Its Medical school consists of 500 academic staff members, and 3500 students. In this project, AUTH will participate with the Lab of Medical Physics, the Datalab – Data and Web Science Lab and the Department of Medical Oncology at Papageorgiou General Hospital.

The Lab of Medical Physics and Digital Innovation is a major research and development centre in: assistive technologies; applied neuroscience; medical education; affective computing; semantic web; medical robotics and brain computer interfaces; radio-diagnosis and non-ionizing radiation. It is composed of 10 research groups, leaders in their respective specialties, which pursue innovative research projects. All groups have been recognized internationally for their research excellence and have been funded by a wide spectrum of sources. The Lab of Medical Physics has fully equipped labs for research (Neuroscience EEG Lab; Living Lab; Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality Labs; Clinical Skills Labs). The Lab has successfully coordinated LLM (Long Lasting Memories) a CIP-PSP EU project on Elderly Care and Cognitive and Physical Training within Ambient Assistive Living, the H2020 SmokeFreeBrain project in line with a call from the Global Alliance of Chronic Diseases (GACD) and currently coordinates the H2020 CAPTAIN, and participates in the Erasmus+ projects AD AUTONOMY, DS Leisure, and Training Against Medical Error (TAME). The Lab also participates to the H2020 INADVANCE project for Palliative Care. To these projects, more can be added, like the FP7 project USEFIL, the FP7 DISCOVER, the Leonardo Da Vinci project “Millenium Hospital”, the CROSSBORDERHEALTH (Interreg CBC), the INTERREG ARCHIMED projects IntraMEDnet and WideMEDnet, the coordination of the Lifelong Learning (TEMPUS) project “ePBLnet” and the eContentPlus project “mEducator”, and numerous others. The Lab of Med Physics is ISO-9001 certified on Software Design, Development & Production and Design & Implementation of Education/Training programs.

The Datalab – Data and Web Science Lab at the AUTH at the Department of Informatics is an active research group engaged in research and innovation on ICT complex data science and engineering technologies, offering end-to- end multi way and multi scope analytics. Data and Web Science Lab can offer end-to-end solutions from raw data to insightful results and from low-level data management to advanced algorithms and applications. It fosters strong international collaborations with multi-disciplinary synergies (engineering, psychology, social sciences, arts, cultural studies, etc.) providing data protection and EU GDPR consultancy and technical support. The group consists of vibrant researchers and developers that encourage entrepreneurship and innovation, providing project management and coordination of research projects and novel ideas for extensive and advanced software and web development. It also supports research and technology transfer to industry through multiple bilateral industry collaborations.

The Department of Medical Oncology at Papageorgiou General Hospital is staffed by specialized medical oncologists who provide comprehensive care and support to oncology patients with all types of solid tumors. Department’s team consists of 6 medical oncologists with extensive clinical experience. In addition, there are 8 fellows in training in the field of Medical Oncology, 26 nurses, and administrative staff who contribute to the care of patients.The aim of the team is to offer modern diagnostic and therapeutic medical services, and continuous comprehensive support for oncology patients and their families. Oncologists are actively involved in various clinical studies, thus giving patients access to innovative treatments. They also have an active presence at many conferences and have contributed to several publications. The Department of Medical Oncology is certified by the quality management system per ELOT EN ISO 9001: 2008 “for its nursing and administrative processes of the Day Clinic and the inpatient Department of Medical Oncology, intern Training, Participation in Clinical trials, Processing and Presentation of related scientific projects”. During 2018 the Department of medical oncology managed 1800 patients with several diagnoses of solid tumors including patients with prostate and breast cancer.

Stockholm Healthcare Services (SLSO) provides care and services for the inhabitants of Stockholm county within advanced home health care, geriatrics, habilitation, psychiatry, primary health care and specialist clinics. SLSO carries out research, development and education in partnership with several centers, such as Academic Primary Health Care Centre (APC), and the medical university Karolinska Institutet (KI).The Academic Primary Health Care Centre (APC) is an umbrella organisation, coordinating primary care science and process development within Stockholm Healthcare Services (SLSO), which is the largest provider of primary health care in Region Stockholm (SLL). APC is further organized in six sections, where one of these hosts eight academic nodes (AVCs), geographically distributed in the Stockholm county area. Each AVC is coordinated by one associated researcher that is responsible for research activities, education and development in altogether >500 primary care units in Region Stockholm.

With deep roots in AI-driven cyber-physical security research, Exalens’s founders want to transform and democratise strong cyber protection for SMEs going digital. We introduce the ambitious concept of cyber-physical security AI to combine the capabilities of a human cybersecurity analyst with an engineer’s understanding of physical system behaviour and processes. Codifying their knowledge and automating it at machine-speed, allowing detection and response to threats in seconds without the need for an in-house security team. Today, at Exalens, we are making that ambition a reality.

The Health Research Institute Hospital La Fe (IIS La Fe) manages the scientific policy of La Fe University Hospital (Hospital Universitari i Politècnic La Fe) in its sphere of influence (La Fe Health Department, Valencia – Departament de Salut València La Fe). Its managing body is the Research Foundation of La Fe University Hospital (Hospital Universitari I Politècnic La Fe), a non-profit foundation of the public sector of the Generalitat Valenciana.

Among the research groups dependent on the Health Research Institute Hospital La Fe is the Joint Research Unit in ICT applied to reengineering socio-sanitary process which overall objective is to research on the field of the application of information and communication technologies improving the processes of socio-health assistance. Among its research lines are the Management of Chronicity (Integrated Care) and Active and Healthy Aging from where research projects are developed together with the Health Department Valencia-La Fe.

The Health Department Valencia-La Fe is one of the health provision areas belonging to the Conselleria de Sanitat Universal i Salut Pública. The Health Department covers a concrete geographical area located in the city of Valencia and coordinates the healthcare services of 300,000 inhabitants. The Department is integrated by a hospital, a speciality centre, 20 centers of primary healthcare and promotes ambulatory activity and alternatives to hospitalization, such as outpatients surgery, outpatient clinic, hospital at home and telemedicine unit. Also, due to the reference nature, the hospital attends patients from other health departments with specific pathologies or conditions. According to the information from 2017, the Department workforce is approximately of 6350 staff (2011 nurses, 1438 healthcare assistants and 1149 physicians as most numerous categories) and 456 training students.

Consortium Strengths

In addition, the composition of the consortium is well balanced in relation to the specific objectives of the project including highly-skilled partners with a proven track record in both technical studies and developments.

The LifeChamps consortium comprises of eight (8) highly-skilled partners with a proven track record both in medical studies and developments as well as in personalized healthcare services. Their complementarity adequately covers all roles required to undertake the LifeChamps’s health‐related quality of life (HRQOL) care support activities and fulfil the project objectives.

Technical Expertise

To achieve the technological challenges of the project, the LifeChamps consortium brings together technical experts from eight (8) different organisation ensuring a diverse set of skills and experiences for designing, developing and testing the LifeChamps solution. Their complementarity extends over many diverse technological fields (including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data, edge analytics, secure warehouse management, wearable sensing, health recommender systems and more) bringing together the necessary expertise and know-how to achieve the project goals.
